What is it?

Diamond Certificate, also called Diamond Grading Report, is a report for diamonds that is created upon request. It gives written information about the authenticity, origin and the characteristics of a gemstone after a precise screening. That means a diamond certificate is the guarantee for the authenticity of a diamond you should not do without when purchasing it.

The real aim of this document is customer protection. It wants the customer to be sure that the merchant is a reliable person or company.

The document about the quality features is prepared by experts – gemologists or diamond appraisers – from independent gemological institutions. Several criterias are considered during the preparation of this certificate. Quality features are about the “4C’s of diamonds” – the most characteristic properties of the precious stones. They determine the worth of diamonds and are as follows:

  1. Colour
  2. Clarity
  3. Cut
  4. Carat

Additional criterias are the polish, symmetry and fluorescence. Magnifying glasses, microscopes and special tools are used during the screening.

GIA?

There are lots of well-known organisations worldwide, like the GIA, HRD, IGI, AGS and many others that provide diamond certificates. GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the most known and appreciated international non-profit-organisation that pays attention to education, research and certification of (anonymous) diamonds. It provides different certificates, which they address very accurate:

GIA Diamond Grading Report: This report investigates the colour, the clarity, the cut and inclusions of diamonds weighing 1.00 carat and more. Diamonds are stones with unique features, which are not similar to each other. So are inclusions. Therefore the document contains a graphic representation with marked inclusions, which functions as the “fingerprint” of the stone in cases of loss or theft.

GIA Diamond Dossier: This certificate is considered for stones with less than 1.00 carat. There is also a laser engraving of the identification number of the diamond included to the details of the standard investigation. Thereby a number is engraved on the surface of the stone, which is also recorded on the certificate for conformance.

GIA Colored Diamond Identification and Origin Report: This document includes the colour grade and the origin of the stone colour. This screening finds out if the coloured stone is a natural gemstone or an artificially coloured gemstone.

GIA Colored Diamond Grading Report: This certificate provides also information about the colour grade and colour origin. In addition to this it comprises a diagram, which gives exact details about the clarity of the stone.
